Div Web Design 5 Things to Avoid

Posted on November,11,2009 by Admin

When deciding on DIV web design, there are many options. An endless amount of options exist in creating a unique user experience. Here are some avoidance tips to help you not make some common mistakes that those who are new to web design often make. 1. Long Loading Time Web pages that take too long to load will turn people off. Today’s web browsing humans have the equivalent of online attention deficit disorder and you only have a short window of opportunity to grab the reader’s attention. A flash intro or excessive graphics can result in people giving up on your site before it loads. You have to also keep in mind that a large number of the cyberspace population is still on dial up. If you absolutely feel you must have an intro, give visitors the option to “Skip Intro” when doing your web design. 2. Pop Ups and Poor Site Navigation. Pop up windows can be tempting to use. You can use them for advertisements, for getting someone’s attention, for a squeeze page to grab user information or subscribing options and more but pop up windows turn the user off. Not only do pop up windows annoy people, they often take users away from your website so you run the risk of losing their interest or take people away. Pop-up blockers are often in use so people could potentially miss vital information if you only deliver it via pop-up. It’s best to make your site navigation clear and apparent to the user instead. Because site navigation is vital for search engines to understand your site layout and for visitors to find what they’re looking for, use a site map and put clear choices for navigation on your home page. 3. Poor Font Choices You might think a beautiful Victorian font looks gorgeous on your home page but your visitors probably won’t think so. Standard fonts are easier on the eyes so you should resist the urge to do fancy web design fonts. Fonts like Arial, Verdana and Times New Roman are the easiest fonts for people to read. 4. A complicated URL Choose a URL that’s easy to remember and if possible, choose one that tells people what they’re getting. If you can relate it to your product, service or message not only will people be more likely to click when they come across you in the search engines but they will be more likely to remember your domain name for future visits. 5. Others’ Ads or Sub Domains When choosing a web host or web design software, avoid the trap of discounted pricing or free services by displaying other ads or having your site hosted on a sub domain. A sub domain might be www.otherwebsite.com/yoursite instead of www.yoursite.com. Not only can this hurt your site rankings but takes away from your image of professionalism. Spend a bit extra on getting your own hosting and retain full and complete control over what advertisements are displayed on your website.
