On-Demand Delivery App

A construction company reached out to us to build an application for an on-demand taxi service. Construction industry faced a lot of challenges with the immediate requirement of materials during the construction process that were not available at hand. We built a customized taxi system with separate applications for customers, vendors and drivers.

Challenge at Beginning

Stakeholders not Tech Savvy

The client was clear with their needs but was not tech savvy enough to state specific requirements.

We initiated brainstorming sessions with the client to plan out the project.

We discussed challenges of all stakeholders- vendors, drivers etc.

We helped narrow down their vision to tangible deliverables.

Based on the requirements of the project we planned out realistic milestones and timeline.

Challenge during Development

Managing All Stakeholders

In GetIt the driver and vendor are treated as separate entities unlike a regular taxi application where such division does not exist.

We built application functionality to optimize the process while simultaneously taking all stakeholders into account.

The customer(construction company) will place the order directly to the vendor & the vendor books the taxi

Challenge of Registration

Verifying Driver’s Identity

We had a challenge to digitally verify the driver’s identity before registration on the application as manual checking would take a lot of time.

We developed a mechanism to cross check and do a background verification of the driver’s identity.

Our algorithm used the Social Security Number (SSN) of the driver to check for any sex offendor, criminal history etc.

Challenge of Order Processing

Separate Location of Vendor’s Office & Warehouse

Most of the time, the registered office location and warehouse location where the vendor stored the goods were different which caused delays as the warehouse was mostly somewhere in the outskirts of the town.

The default pickup location of the order was the vendor’s warehouse.

An order was only assigned to a driver if he was in the three mile radius of the warehouse.

Challenge of Logistics

Maximum order delivery in 1-hour span

The delivery is outsourced to taxi drivers at a minimum wage of USD 15 per hour.

  • Needed to have a logistics facility only for a limited time to avoid extra cost.
  • Delivery persons often repeated routes while on the field thus wasting time
  • Mismanagement limited the capacity of the orders that can be delivered thus leading to limited business

We developed a machine-learning algorithm and all the resumes received by ChampHR were filtered through the algorithm for various background checks, skills etc. in the following order

Step 1

We divided the deliverable area into four equal zones- A, B, C and D.

Step 2

We sorted the zip codes as per the divided zones.

Step 3

Sorted the orders in one zone in ascending order of radial distance from the store

Step 4

Assigned one delivery person for every zone.

  • This route optimization ensures that delivery boys don’t repeat routes.
  • Maximum orders get delivered in minimum time.
  • Ensures maximum orders at the fastest time.
~~~~~~~ For example ~~~~~~~
before the route optimization, a taxi driver delivers 2 orders in an hour.
  • Cost per order = USD 15/2 = USD 7.5
  • After route optimization, a driver can deliver 4 orders in an hours
  • Cost per order = USD 15/4 = USD 3.75
  • Savings per order = USD 7.5 - 3.75 = USD 3.75
We were able to develop a highly functional on-demand taxis service with customizations for the construction industry. We built applications with smooth operation for all three stakeholders-drivers, vendors and customers(construction company). We solved the issues such as distance between the construction site and warehouse, payment challenge between three entities etc. and also did route optimization for drivers to save freight costs. Thus we were able to help construction industry moves leaps and bounds with their logistics and operations by leveraging the use of technology.
